Wood Apart from war and accidents, most of the deceased seem to have passed away from cancer, usually listed as the 2nd most likely killer of Americans, after heart attack in 1st place. Cumulatively, about 49 per thousand of us have died. The age-specific mortality rate was about 20/1000 per year at 57 in Australia in 1960. The U.S.A. mortality rate is about 9 per thousand per year at 57 in 2007, just a little higher than our infant mortality. See Longevity.
